Football Development and Coaching Foundation Degree (FdA)
The FdA Football Development and Coaching degree has been designed in partnership with employers from the sports industry via our Professional Advisory Group. The course delivers a blend of theory and practice so that students are equipped with extensive knowledge and skills and are therefore highly employable on completion of the course.
Learn how sport can be used to inspire young people, develop communities and fulfil the potential of all individuals, from grassroots, all the way up to working with elite athletes. You’ll explore talent development, elite sport, sport coaching, international sport, education, sports policy and disability sport.
The team believes strongly in the value of practical experience, which is why the Sport Studies degree contains such a variety of work-based learning. This includes coaching young people, managing sports events, deliver physical activity programmes and writing sport plans for governing bodies. It’s all key to becoming a well-rounded sport development professional.
Programme Aims
- To develop an applied understanding of the concepts, theories and principles related to sport development and coaching.
- To develop an applied awareness and insight of the application of sport development and coaching processes involved across diverse groups and settings.
- To enhance employability with the development of a range of skills and attributes relevant to the sport and physical activity sector.
- To provide conditions for vocational learning and applied practice with a range of work-based and voluntary opportunities in community environments and the workplace.
- To develop core academic skills necessary to be able to take full advantage of further study, including progression on to Honours level study.
Programme Modules
This programme has been structured in a way to to develop individuals with a both applied theoretical and practical understanding of sport development, physical activity, and coaching that is applied to the sports industry to enhance ‘professionalism’ within the sector. The successful completion of the programme will give the graduate the skills necessary to work within and beyond sports sectors and to continue to study at Level 6 to achieve a BA Honours Degree in Sport Development and Coaching.

Additional Entry Criteria
In addition to the above, preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
• Engagement in sport as a participant, coach, leader or volunteer
• NGB Coaching Awards
• Leadership Awards (JSLA or CSLA or HSLA) or equivalent
• Work experience (ideally in the sport and leisure sector)
• Access Qualification – Pass
Applications from non-traditional learners will be encouraged and their acceptance on the programme will reflect their work.
Duration
This full-time programme spans two years and encompasses both Levels 4 and 5 of Sports Development and Coaching.
