The Department for Education has recently confirmed a significant “purge” of 16 apprenticeship standards, as reported by FE Week. This move targets courses the government now labels as “low value” or “not meeting the economy’s needs”, including cornerstone management qualifications. The government has confirmed these standards will not be funded past September 2026. Given the onboarding time required, the window for new starts is effectively closing now.

For employers relying on the Apprenticeship Levy or co-investment to upskill their management tier, the window of opportunity is closing.

Which Standards are Affected?

The full list of standards being withdrawn includes a wide range of sectors, from business administration to specialised technical roles:

Improvement practitioner 4 £6,000

We are fully equipped to support businesses in securing the final funding slots for these three critical pathways. If you are planning to enrol staff in the following, we recommend taking action immediately to lock in your Levy allocation:

For those specifically seeking the Team Leading or Ops Manager standards, the time for “future planning” has shifted to “immediate action.”

Enrol Now or Lose Funding

Once these standards are officially withdrawn, the associated funding disappears. Existing apprentices will be able to complete their qualifications, but new starts will be blocked.

Review your training requirements immediately. If you have emerging leads or managers who require these specific qualifications, securing their place now is the only way to guarantee government-backed funding.

Don’t let a policy shift stall your team’s professional development.
