T-Levels Work Placement

Seamus Smith

Bourneside Electrical Services

“I completed my work placement at Bourneside Electrical Services from October 2025 – May 2026. I learned many new skills about the trade and really enjoyed my time working because the people were very friendly and taught me a lot of valuable skills.”

Learning and Development

“During my seven months on site, I gained extensive hands-on experience across both first-fix and second-fix electrical operations. For the first-fix stage, I measured the correct locations to install backboxes and routed the necessary cabling for downlights, sockets, and switches within timber frames. Once the walls were freshly plastered, I progressed to second-fix work, where I stripped cables to complete terminations for double sockets and 2-gang 2-way light switches. I also learned how to use a multi-tool to chase walls so I could bring cables to new switches, how to cut precise holes in ceilings for downlights, and how to feed cables through copex to terminate high-end outdoor lighting systems.”

Performance

“Seamus demonstrated excellent technical progression while working under the supervision of industry professionals, including Connor, Josh, and Hayden. The preparation he received in the MITSkills workshop directly supported his on-site safety and performance; he successfully applied his knowledge of fault-finding and dead-testing to verify whether a board was live or dead before starting any physical work. His ability to systematically follow installation plans, use specialist tools safely, and complete precise terminations showed a fantastic work ethic and high standard of practical ability throughout his placement.”

Reflection

“MITSkills helped me to prepare for my work placement so that I would feel more comfortable and equipped when starting it. The knowledge I gained from this will help me in future to become a successful electrician.”
