The Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) award level 3 covers the fundamentals of teaching in adult education and covers:
• Identifying learning needs
• Planning for learning
• Engaging learners
• Assessing learning
• Introduction to basic teaching skills, principles and theory
• A micro-teaching session of 15 minutes

Frequently asked questions
Why should I undertake PTLLS?
New entrants to teaching in England are required by regulations to achieve PTLLS within one year

What does the course consist of?
In order to achieve PTLLS you must successfully complete a combination of mandatory and optional units that meets the City and Guilds rules of combination (ROC)

What units will I cover in the PTLLS course?
• Roles responsibilities and relationships in lifelong learning
• Understanding inclusive learning and teaching in lifelong learning
• Using inclusive learning and teaching approaches in lifelong learning
• Principles of assessment in lifelong learning

What assignments will I need to complete during the course?
• Roles responsibilities and relationships in lifelong learning
• Understanding inclusive learning and teaching in lifelong learning
• Understanding the principles and practices of assessment

How long does the course take?
You will need to attend the training centre for the periods as detailed below. In addition there are a number of assignments that need to be completed. The course duration is individual to each applicant however there is an expectation that you will not be able to complete this course in a period of less than six months

How often do I attend the training centre?
You will be required to attend the training centre one day a week for the first two weeks followed by one day a month for a period of five months

What will be the length of the day’s attendance?
Each day will commence at 09.00hrs and finish at 17.00hrs

What will be the day of attendance during the week?
The day of attendance will be a Tuesday

What is the credit value of the level 3 PTLLS course?
The course has a value of 12 credits

What is the cost of the course?
The cost of the course is £350.00

When must the course fee be paid?
The course fee must be paid in full before the course is commenced. If your employer is paying for the course please provide us with a signed order from your company confirming this. We will then invoice your company

If I drop out of the course or do not fully complete it can I claim a refund on the course fees?
Unfortunately there is no refund of any fees

What is included in the course fees?

• City and Guilds registration fees
• Certification fees
• Loose leaf folder and dividers
• City and Guilds course details and assignment briefs

Is there an age limit for undertaking the PTLLS course?
Candidates must be at least 19 years old

What are the entry requirements?
There are no entry requirements; however there will be an initial assessment to ensure that you have the potential and opportunity to achieve the qualification

How will I be assessed during the programme?
This will be through practical lessons, group sessions, a number of assignments, assessments and a micro-teaching session

What jobs can a PTLLS award lead to?
This qualification can help you to progress in teaching/training roles in a wide range of organisations in the lifelong learning sector. These include:
• Public sector organisations
• Private sector organisations
• Further Education, Adult and Community Education

What subjects can I do my micro-teaching session on?
You can do it on any subject that you wish but you can make life a lot easier for yourself by doing something which you have an interest or understanding in. A micro-teaching session is 15 minute lesson to your peers

Will I be required to observe others carrying out teaching?
Yes, during the course you will participate as an observer for 45 minutes whilst others are delivering their micro-teaching session

Am I required to register with the Institute for Learning IfL)?
Teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector in England should consult the IfL website www.ifl.ac.uk/membership as registration is normally required

What is a reflective learning journal?
This is reflecting on what you have done and what you have achieved. Reflection is a vital part of professional practice and it is important that you should develop skills of reflection. You will be assisted in construction of reflective learning journals during the course

Can I progress to another course after completion of the PTLLS course?
Yes, you may be able progress to a Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) or the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS)

VEHICLE REFINISHING

Who is the course for?
You should be employed in the vehicle refinishing trade or actively seeking a job in the trade. This can be in either a light or heavy vehicle workshop. You should have a keen interest in vehicle refinishing (painting). You should have a good eye for detail and colour.

What will I study?

You will study the various techniques in preparing vehicle panels. You will learn how to mix and apply various types of primers and how to mix, tint and apply various types of colour and laquers. You will also learn how to rectify minor paint defects. You will study at a purpose built college. This will be roughly seven weekly blocks per year. Accommadation will be found for you.

What will I need for the course?

You should have a good eye for detail and colour. You should be a ‘clean’ worker and be able to work on your own.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by a competent assessor in the college were you study. You will also be assessed by your assessor in your workplace

How long is the course?

2 years for a level 2 apprenticeship
3 years for a level 3 advanced apprenticeship

What do I gain if successful?

A recognised Level 2 and Level 3 Framework Apprenticeship which will enable you to work in the industry and progress to a fruitful career.

The Cost

For all candidates aged 16-18 the course is fully funded by the Government. It is available to anybody that is working in the industry. Outside of the 16-18 age group costs will be dependant on individual candidate & employer details.

AIR CONDITIONING COURSE

AIR CONDITIONING COURSE

Who is the course for?

This course is for all Technicians who wish to gain a Refrigerant Handling Certificate to satisfy the latest DEFRA standards by 4th July 2010.

What will I study?

Gain an understanding of Refrigerant handling to DEFRA standards
Understand the basic principles of how motor vehicle Air Conditioning Systems operate.
Understand some basic diagnostic principles using pressures to understand symptom problems

What will I need for the course?

You will need overalls, steel toe cap boots, pens and pencils.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be by one Practical Task. On successful completion of task; a one hour multiple choice exam will be taken.

How long is the course?

The course is one day attendance for technicians with Air Conditioning experience

What do I gain if successful?

The Institute of The Motor Industry Certificate AC1r- Refrigerant Handling Certificate

Who is the course for?

This course is designed for people interested in the repair of vehicle bodies. You should be employed in the vehicle body repair trade or be actively seeking a job in the trade. This work might involve repairing accident damage, restoring or modifying vehicle bodies

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by a competent assessor in your college and again by your assessor in your workplace. Your college course will be roughly seven weekly blocks per year.

How long is the course?

2 years for level 2 apprenticeship
3 years for a level 3 advanced apprenticeship

All courses are delivered by block release in Bristol, seven blocks for 5 days each block per year.

What do I gain if successful?

A recognised Level 2 and Level 3 Framework Apprenticeship which will enable you to work in the industry and progress to a fruitful career.

VEHICLE BODY FITTER

Who is the course for?

You should ideally be working in a vehicle body workshop or actively seeking a workplacement. This can be either a light or heavy vehicle workshop. You should have a keen interest in the stripping and fitting of either accident damaged vehicles or vehicle restoration. You should have an interest in the mechanical and body structure of vehicles

What will I study?

You will learn mechanical, electrical and trim panel stripping and fitting. You will learn the basic vehicle system structures and how they relate to one another. You should enjoy all aspects of repairing motor vehicles and have a basic understanding of their operation

What will I need for the course?

A keen interest in motor vehicles.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by a competent assessor in your college and again by your assessor in your workplace. Your college course will be roughly seven weekly blocks per year.

How long is the course?

2 years for level 2 apprenticeship
3 years for a level 3 advanced apprenticeship

LIGHT VEHICLE MAINTENANCE

LIGHT VEHICLE MAINTENANCE

Who is the course for?

You should be employed in the light vehicle maintenance trade or actively seeking a job in the trade.

What will I study?

You will study the theory of motor vehicles either on a day release basis or on a block release, being, usually one week at a time at a college or training centre. Your practical training will take place in your place of work and will be monitored by one of our assessors visiting you regularly.

What will I need for the course?

A keen interest in motor vehicles is important.

How will I be assessed?

You will take some written tests and complete on-line tests at the college. In the workplace our assessor will observe you carrying out certain tasks.

How long is the course?

2 years for a level 2 apprenticeship
A further one year for a level 3 advanced apprenticeship

What do I gain if successful?

A recognised Level 2 and Level 3 Framework Apprenticeship which will enable you to work in the industry and progress further in the Motor Trade.

Due to our recent success we are looking to expand our team and require skilled, motivated people to join our team.

Applications are invited for the following positions:

Hair Dressing Lecturer/Assessor

As the hairdressing lecturer you will be expected to deliver high quality teaching and learning by providing students with a planned learning experience, managing the learning process, guiding and supporting learners.

A certificate in Education or recognized teaching qualification is desirable but not essential, experience of teaching, training peers or transferring skills to others, e.g. training, coaching; mentoring is desirable though not essential. To be considered you must hold D32/A1 qualifications or willing to work towards and have at relevant trade experience. You will also have the confidence, skills and ability to start and hit the ground running.

Plumbing Lecturer/Assessor

You will be expected to manage a case load of learners, liaise with employers and that your learners progress through their qualifications. You will have a Background in the industry and qualified to NVQ level three. Ideally you will have knowledge of the private training sector, hold a relevant teaching qualification and be A1/D32 qualified with experience of work place assessment. You must be a self-starter with strong organizational skills, enthusiastic, well-motivated, and flexible.

Clerical Apprentice

We have an opportunity for an excellent quality apprenticeship enabling you to gain a recognised qualification and learn whilst you earn. The role would involve general administration duties including: Answering the telephone, photocopying, filing, greeting visitors and updating bespoke computer system. You must be polite have a good telephone manner, computer literate and be capable of working in a very busy environment
